Hairdressers

Our last Community Helper that we learnt about has been hairdressers. The children have really enjoyed taking on the role of the hairdresser in the St Marys Salon and have used their imaginations and creativity to book customers appointments and wash, cut and style each others hair. They have learnt about different objects and what they are used for. The children have created their own crazy and fun hairstyles in the creative area, using different materials. Children used playdough heads and spent a lot of time cutting the playdough hair after watching it grow, practising their scissor control and gaining confidence in using scissors. We also had a visit from Blackburn College hairdressing students who came to show the children what real hairdressers do and styled some of the children's hair.

What to Expect When......................

To work in partnership with parents we have given out our What to Expect When assesments. Often children will do things at home, where they feel more confident, that they don't do in nursery. It gives parents an opportunity to share their children's achievements and contribute to their children's Learning Journal. If there are things your child cannot yet manage their key worker will use these to form their next steps. Please tick off what your child does at home, be honest and return them to your child's key worker. If you have any questions, please speak to Amanda.

Post Officers

The children learnt all about the role of the Postal Workers last week. The children listened to the story of The Jolly Postman during story time, where the Jolly Postman delivers his letters to story characters such as Goldilocks, The Big Bad Wolf, Cinderella etc. The children also took on the role of the post officer and delivered letters to mock houses to match the characters from the story. They also delivered parcels to practitioners. The children practised their mark making skills and wrote a letter to their family. They then put their letters in an envelope and addressed them with a practitioner. We then took the children in small groups to the local post office and they each bought a stamp for their letters and posted them in the post box. Once the letters had arrived home we encourgaed the children to discuss them with their families before returning them to nursery to talk about at group time and display them. The children were encouraged to match numbers, playing a posting game. They had to match the same number stamp to the letter and envelope before posting it in the toy postbox. Children also took part in group time activities all week to develop their Cmmunication and Language, Understanding. They had to differentiate between big and little and between a stamp, letter and parcel and they had to post them to different characters.


















Wellbeing Wednesday - March

This months wellbeing Wednesday will be on Wednesday 23rd March. The children will be learning all about safety in the kitchen. Children will take part in an activity where they must decide which things are safe for them to touch and which are not. They will also discuss how to keep themselves safe during group time, looking at items they must touch such as hot ovens, pans, tablets etc. Can all children also dress in GREEN. Safety information will be sent home for all parents too.

Vets

The children were learning all about the role of the vet last week and pets that we might have at home. The role play area was transformed into a vets and the children took on the role of the vet to care for our play dogs, cat, rabbits and hamster. The children took part in two mathematical activities, in both the children were encouraged to count 1:1, talk about more and less, count two groups altogether and begin simple addition and sharing out objects equally. Children were encouraged to build kennels for the toy dogs, thinking of their own ways to build it, making sure it is big enough, do they need a roof etc? The children had stories about Splat The Cat and Hairy Maclary (Dog) and we also had visits from 2 budgies, a cat and a hamster to teach children to be careful around animals and to be gental and kind.
