Pre-writing skills

We are continuing with our pre-writing exercise skills.........................................

The children have been playing 10 pin bowling to develop their shoulder strength. This activity also encourages children to work together rebuilding the skittles, taking turns and promoting maths skills, counting how many skittles they have knocked down, left up and comparing more and less etc.

The children have lots of fun popping bubbles, using a straw to strengthen their wrist muscles. The children were very motivated and enthusiastic with this activity.

September 2016

There are only a limited number of places available now for funded 2 year olds and 3-4 year olds for September. If you know anyone who is looking for places please ask them to contact the nursery as soon as possible, thank you.

Library Visit

The pre-school children had a trip to Blackburn Central Library to promote reading with children from a young age and support children's love of stories and how to share them with others. The children also took part in Rhyme Time.

Shoulders

We have been having lots of fun carrying out activities to support the development of our shoulder muscles to support our pre-writing skills.

The children have been learning how to play volley ball to strengthen their shoulder muscles, using big over arm throws, using one arm or two. This was extended as some children used one hand to throw the ball up in the air andthe other to hit it.

The children also used large arm movements to hit the ballons around the basket ball court. The slow movements of the balloons allowed children opportunity to keep hitting the balloon before it fell.

Pre-writing skills

When you had your babies, however they arrived in this world did you think that on that day they would just be able to get up and walk. Of course you didn't there are so many stages from the day a child is born until a child can stand up and walk for themselves. Each one of those steps is a huge achievement, something to celebrate and equally as important for a childs development as the step before. However, many parent's believe that at age 3 or 4 a child will just be able to pick up a pencil and start writing their name. There are so many important and valuable steps to achieve before a child is physically ready to be able to hold and control a pencil. Over this summer term we will be looking at and carrying out various activities with chidren to promote and develop strength in children's shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers. In order for children to become successful writers, children need lots of opportunities to develop their motor skills. Motor skills are motions carried out when the brain, nervous system and muscles work together. Children need to build their gross motor skills in order to develop their fine motor skills.
As we carry out a variety of specifically chosen activities we will display them in nursery as well as post them on the blog to give parents a better understanding of why chosen activities are carried out in nursery.
Children who are going to school this September and are ready and interested will be focussing on letter formations or other mark making. All children do have access to mark making resources on a daily basis as well as the pre-writing skills activities we carry out. Please don't rush your child into writing. It is more important that they are ready and able and then it will all fall into place.

Toddle Waddle 2016

Thank you to all our parents who joined us for our Toddle Waddle, it was so lovely to see you all especially during Ramadan when we understand how tired you all are. Unfortunately we got wet both am and pm but it did not stop our celebrations. Great British weather for a Great British day. We had a lovely walk around the park followed by a party snack, not forgetting singing Happy Birthday to our very own Queen. After party food the children played some royal themed games and took part in party dancing while shaking our royal red, white and blue ribbons.
Our Toddle Waddle was all to raise money for Barnardos (www.barnardos.org.uk/bigtoddle.htm)
As one of the UK's leading children's charities, Barnardo's works directly with 240,000 children, young people and families every year. They run over 960 vital services across the UK, including counselling for children who have been abused, fostering and adoption services, vocational training and disability inclusion groups.
Every Barnardo's service is different but each believes in the potential in every child and young person, no matter who they are, what they have done or what they have been through. Thank you so much for all the sponsor money you raised. If you have not handed your sponsor money in yet please do so by Friday 17th June and we will inform you all of the amount we have raised.  Here are a few photos from the day:
