Healthy treats

One of the children kindly brought us some apples off his apple tree in his garden. We decided to use the healthy snack and do some baking. We wanted to explore healthier choices with the children as Blackburn with Darwen have some of the poorest tooth decay in the county. We found a receipe using the apples, dates and oats, we added spices for an extra taste and blended them together and formed the mixture into rounds. The children helped to cut up the apples and dates developing fine motor skills. The E.Y.P. talked to them about healthy foods and where the apples had come from. Many children named fruits and vegetables that were good for us. The children understood that chocolate wasn't good for us and one child even commented "only as a treat on Friday" The children then formed their little cakes and we left them to chill before taking them home, to encourage children to try new food textures and tastes.
