Policy of the month-December

Jewellery Policy

The welfare and safety of the children attending St Mary’s Nursery is paramount. The Management of the nursery feel that the implementation of this policy is required due to information which has been given to staff when attending training courses.

Advise and clarification of our statutory duty in relation to the wearing of jewellery has been sought from a number of agencies and experts, including;
Environmental Health
Health and Safety Officers
Equality of Human Rights Commission.

There are a number of items of jewellery which can be dangerous when in a Early Years Environment. Therefore all items of jewellery shall not be worn by children attending or staff/students/ visitor working within the nursery. Pins/clips used to secure headscarves, MUST be worn on the inside of the scarves.

There are exceptions which the law states are classified as ‘Articles of Faith’ and NOT jewellery. Our research has shown that these articles do not include;
earings,
nose studs
tongue jewellery
other piercings
necklaces
rings (excluding wedding bands)
