Handa's Surprise and Oliver's Vegetables

Over the next two weeks the children will be learning all about healthy eating, looking at different types of fruits and vegetables following the stories of Handa's Surprise and Oliver's Vegetables.

Spider Sandwiches

This weeks activities have been lead by Hanaa and linked to the story, Spider Sandwiches. The children have manipulated dough to make different bugs such as spiders and worms etc. They used their creative and critical thinking to find ways to hide from Monster Max before he ate them, children used construction pieces to build dens for the bugs to hide in and bridges for them to escape accross. They used their mark making skills to colour pictures of Max. Children also explored water beads and observed how they grew as they absorbed water, they squished them all to create a jellylike substance. The children practised their counting skills while creating a spider picture and some children were encouraged to do simple additions to extend their maths skills further. Children explored and observed a real spider, watching it crawl and climb and they went out into the park environment to find hidden, pretend spiders. Parents were encouraged to explore their creativity too by supporting their child in making a spider from junk modelling resources as part of our at home activity.

April Attendance

Congratulations to all our morning

children who have received their 100% attendance certificates for the month of April. April was a particulary poor month for attendance with 202 sessions missed so an extra special well done to everyone who got 100%.

Bear Hunt in the park

The children took their own teddy bears into the park on a bear hunt, exploring nature and the world around them.

We're Going on a Bear Hunt

Last weeks activities were lead by Fahmeeda based on the story We're going on a Bear Hunt. Children explored colour mixing and printed bear footprints using a potato, discovering colours that make brown when mixed. They had brown playdough to represent the mud in the story and were encouraged to manipulate the dough to achieve  a planned effect, making the snow from the story or a cave to hide the bear in. Additional props such as bear footprints were added to the smll world area and children were encouraged to build a cave for the bear, thinking about how they can build it, which bricks they need, what to do if it falls down etc. This type of acivity develops children's thought processes and problem solving skills to promote their mathematical development. During group time the children learnt about over, under and through and had to act out the positional language with a bear. The children coloured bear pictures in mark making, developing their pencil control skills and their understanding of colour, making choices and how to be creative. Children discovered different textures in the tyres, representing different sections of the story. The week ended on a bear hunt in the park with their own teddy bears.
