Sunsmart policy




A polite reminder to parents to apply sun cream before your child comes to nursery now the weather is getting warmer.

                                                SUNSMART POLICY

The Every Child Matters Framework has a ‘be healthy’ outlook. This policy ensures the children attending St Mary’s Nursery @ The Park are safeguarded from accidental injury caused by the sun.

At St Mary’s Nursery we want staff and children to enjoy the sun safely. We will work with staff and parents to achieve this through:

Education These measures are currently in place:

  • All children will have a sunsmart activity time at the start of the summer term.
  • All children will paint sunsmart pictures to re-enforce the sun protection messages and a display will be created for parents.
  • Parents and guardians will be given information explaining what we are doing about sun protection and how they can help at the beginning of the summer term.
  • We will review the sun protection policy on a yearly basis at staff meetings to re-enforce the importance of this policy to staff.

Protection this is more of an ongoing process.
Shade

  • Staff will aim to provide outdoor activities under the shade of the canopies – during the hours of 11.00am and 2.00pm on hot days.
  • During visits to the Park activities will be carried out under the shade of the trees.


Clothing

  • Parents will be encouraged to provide sun hats and staff will actively encourage children to wear their hat when playing outside from May each year.
  • Notices will be placed around the setting reminding parents to bring in a hat for their child.

Sunscreen

  • Parents MUST protect their children against the sun by applying sun screen before they attend their nursery session.
  • Water is available throughout the day outside and inside during summer months.

Cake sale for Stand up to cancer

On Thursday the children will be making rice crispy cakes to be sold at our cake sale on Friday 3rd May.  There will be a range of different cakes including homemade chocolate brownie's, children’s rice crispy cakes and many more. 

All cakes will be priced from 20p to 50p, all proceeds will be going to the charity Stand Up To Cancer. To find out more about our chose charity please follow the link below.

Juicing

The children have been showing an interest in juicing during role play. We provided the tools needed to make 'real' juice. Supported by an adult we made orange and apple juice. 

It tasted lovely!

Mathematics: Shape, space and measure
•Begins to use the language of size

Communication and Language: Speaking
•Uses a variety of questions (e.g. what, where, who).
 •Uses simple sentences (e.g.’ Mummy gonna work.’)
  
Expressive arts and design: Being imaginative
Notices what adults do, imitating what is observed and then doing it spontaneously when the adult is not there.
 •Engages in imaginative role-play based on own first-hand experiences.

Dinosaur bones

Today we are archaeologists by finding out and exploring, showing curiosity, and a particular interest. 









How adults can support children playing and exploring at home... 
  • Play with children. Encourage them to explore, and show your own interest in discovering new things. 
•Help children as needed to do what they are trying to do, without taking over or directing. 


• Join in play sensitively, fitting in with children’s ideas.


•Model pretending an object is something else, and help develop roles and stories.


 •Encourage children to try new activities and to judge risks for themselves. Be sure to support children’s confidence with words and body language.


 •Pay attention to how children engage in activities -- the challenges faced, the effort, thought, learning and enjoyment. Talk more about the process than products. 


•Talk about how you and the children get better at things through effort and practice, and what we all can learn when things go wrong.
