Easter Holidays
Nursery closes at 4pm on Thursday 30th March 2017. We hope you have a lovely sunny Easter Holiday and enjoy spending time as a family. If you would like to share your adventures with us you can email us your photos to a.halstead@stmarysblackburn.ac.uk these will be entered into your child's learning journal. Nursery opens again on Tuesday the 18th April and we welcome our new starters from Monday 24th April as we begin our new term.
Pirate Adventure
We have thoroughly enjoyed our Pirate Adventure this half term. The children have took part in many activities linked to all seven areas of the curriculum. Here are some of the activities we have carried out to support children's development.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Pirate themed playdough, promoting children's relationships with others, providing space where children can play with others in a quieter environment giving them the privacy and therefore confidence to start conversations with others, talking about what they are doing.
Displaying children's work they have created, giving them praise and encouraging them to take pride in their achievements.
Communication and Language
Making and sailing pirate boats, promoting children to work in groups providing opportunities for children to communicate with others and share their experiences.
Eye Spy pirate bottles, promoting children's language, labelling items for them and encouraging them to talk about what they can see hidden in the bottles. Activity extended to home too for children to talk about their own pirate treasure bottle.
Physical Development
Walking the plank, indoors and out, promoting children' s physical skills and building their confidence when it comes to climbing, balancing and jumping.
Pirate themed obstacle course, moving in a variety of different ways.
Island hopping game, promoting physical skills to move from one desert island to another in different ways.
Pirate themed Wake and Shake songs to copy actions and promote movement.
Literacy
Enjoying a variety of pirate themed stories. Children can learn to understand how stories are structured, become confident with the story and ask questions about it.
Pirate ship themed book area, providing an interesting and exciting space for children to enjoy stories and look at books independently.
Mathematics
Pirate treasure game, learning about subtraction, numerals and counting up to or beyond 10, knowing the quantity of numbers.
Pirate Island splat game, finding the correct numbered spot to try and find the treasure and splat the spot to see if you can find the gold splodge.
Interactive pirate map, looking at numbers and promoting children's counting skills.
Understanding the World
Pirate themed small world play, engaging in play involving pirates and treasure and a pirate ship
Expressive Arts and Design
Creating pirate hats, flags, eye patches.
Promoting creative skills and creating a pirate themed display.
Pirate pictures, using our handprints.
Pirate ship building, using empty boxes and promoting children's imaginative skills. Children to play pirates, extending and adapting their play to suit their imagination.
Creating a treasure map, using and developing their imagination.

Paper Aeroplanes
As part of our focus on child lead ideas two of our boys showed an interest in making paper aeroplanes, from this we had a day full of making and flying our paper planes. We had just the right spurt of wind to help the planes glide through the air.
