We have been focusing on mathematical activities during group time this past few weeks. This has enabled practitioners to carry out assessments and observations on their key children. We have focused on four different styles of mathematical activities to cover a wide range of learning opportunities to support numbers and shape, space and measure.
We have looked at shapes. Talking about the names of shapes. How they look, how many corners, how many sides etc. We have made patterns with the shapes.
We have been playing the strawberry game. Children have had opportunities to count up to or beyond 10. Put specific quantities of strawberries in their basket. Match quantity to spots on the dice. Talk about more and less.
Children have had opportunities to sort items into their different properties such as colour or theme. Children have counted how many of something and talked about more or less.
We have made links of certain quantities. Talked about longer or shorter than. Bigger or smaller than and continued a pattern. Children have also had opportunities to practise their counting skills.
