Arctic Animals

The children have been learning lots while exploring arctic animals. They have used wooden blocks to build igloos, learning about structures then build across as well as up, to create enclosed spaces. They also took this outside to explore building with large boxes.

Children have focused on their mathematical development with two different activities focusing on maths. We have explored counting, encouraging children to count 1:1 so they get the correct amount. We have been teaching children about more and less as well as learning that two numbers can be the same. Children were encouraged to share out penguins, giving each arctic animal the same amount. This was differentiated for some children to give the polar bear 1, then 2 and then 3 etc. It was also made more challenging by encouraging children to give each arctic animal 6 penguins when there were only 10 altogether. This encourages children to develop their problem solving skills and use their critical thinking to try and solve the problem.

Children used a variety of resources to create different black and white pictures. Some used different collage pieces, learning how to fit pieces into spaces and use glue and spreaders appropriately. Some children used paint, brushes, their fingers or hands to create pictures. They also used a penguin, polar bear and seal to explore making prints on paper. Others used chalk to make different marks on paper.
